Every day since January 2011, 10,000 Americans have turned 65 and will continue to
do so for the next 20 years. As age rises, so does the likelihood that these individuals will develop
Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. Research evidence strongly suggests that increased physical
exercise may not only improve physical function in older adults but may also improve mood and slow
the progression of cognitive decline. Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants must be better
prepared to develop and carry out evidence based plans of care strongly rooted in current exercise
science and psycho-social learning theories for older adults of all cognitive abilities.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, the learner will be able to:

1. Utilize standardized norms to quantify fall risk and frailty in the older adult.
2. Appropriately prescribe a high intensity functional exercise program for an older adult with or without cognitive impairment.
3. Develop and manage or carry out an effective and comprehensive plan of care for a person with cognitive impairment.
