TPTA Practice Committee: Functional Maintenance Programming

The purpose of this CEU is to offer both a rationale for therapy’s role in maintaining function and developing/implementing a system for designing functional maintenance programs for the elderly population. This course will review the therapist on federal/state/practice act rules/regulations, that provide a social and an economic rationale for the importance of maintaining the function of the geriatric patient.  Lastly, this course will review a process for identifying individuals appropriate for functional maintenance programming and the documentation elements for evaluation, treatment planning, and functional maintenance program design, education and follow-up.


Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the rules and regulations as they guide therapy services in relation to functional maintenance programming

  • Identify when functional maintenance programs are indicated and for which population groups.

  • Understand underlying factors that cause declines in function and independence.

  • Understand important elements to include in therapy documentation (evaluation, progress notes, daily notes) when a functional maintenance program is indicated.

  • Design a functional maintenance program including; knowledge of treatment planning, goals, and general caregiver approaches.

Speaker Bio:

Jon Anderson, PT graduated from Angelo State University physical therapy program and has worked as a physical therapist and therapy education resource for Ensign Services, Inc. since 2008. He is a Tom Waugh Fellow and a licensed PT in Texas and California, and is certified as an instructor in dementia care and clinical education through the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and is a member of both the TPTA and APTA.
