Course Description:

 

This course defines best practices in concussion management with an emphasis on evaluation and treatment of the balance systems. It includes both lecture and lab and provides the clinician with tool

 

Objectives:

• Define a concussion and understand pathophysiology.• Understand the role of the vestibular system for eye and head coordination and balance as well as with the autonomic nervous system.
• Perform basic clinical vestibular tests and identify appropriate care plan.
• Understand correlation with vestibular-visual systems.
• Identify how to integrate impairments into a return to play/work/life protocol.
• Transition from best practices in the clinic to “playing field.”

Speaker Bio:

Bridgett Wallace, PT, DPT is an owner of 360 Balance & Hearing – a specialty clinic in Austin, TX for dizziness, balance and hearing disorders. Her clinic has received the “Top Clinics” award by the ABJ for 5 years. Bridgett is also the CEO of Concussion Health – which provides education to providers specific to concussion management, and serves as a consultant for both the UT Sports Medicine Department (since 1999), and the MLB Professional Umpires (since 2011). She also serves on Advisory Boards for the APTA Concussion Committee, Healthy Brain Foundation and Conquering Concussions. Bridgett speaks across the nation, has authored the “Balance” chapter for Therapeutic Exercise, and is the creator of PLAY IT SAFE® - an iphone app for time of injury concussion assessment. Bridgett received her Physical Therapy degree from Texas State University (1995) and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Hardin-Simmons (2008), and has completed her competency-based Certification in Vestibular Rehab (1998). Bridgett received the Distinguished Alumni award from Texas State University Department of Physical Therapy (2013).
