This two-hour course will cover ethical principles and legal factors which impact on the physical therapy profession and apply these concepts to clinical practice. Topics to be discussed are current ethical problems common to PT practice, ethical decision making process, the APTA Code of Ethics and the Guide for Professional Conduct, and legal standards of practice. Mode of teaching will be through lecture, active group exercises with case studies, and group discussion.  




At the end of the course, the participant will be able to:
1. Define ethical distress, dilemma and locus of authority.
2. Discuss confounding factors that impact ethics of care.
3. Recognize conflict between legal and ethical principles.
4. Review the Texas Practice Act and Rules and regulations as they apply to physical therapy.
5. Apply the steps of the ethical decision-making process to case studies.
6. Review the APTA Code of Ethics in conjunction with case studies.

Speaker Bio:

Loretta Dillon, PT, DPT, MS, is the Director of Clinical Education and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas at El Paso. She currently practices in a local acute care hospital in addition to her teaching responsibilities, which include primarily clinical education and Evidence-Based Practice. Loretta has worked with students and clinical instructors in her position as DCE for the last 22 years, and has helped educate clinical instructors by co-teaching the Texas Consortium Clinical Instructor Certification Course for the last 19 years. She is an active member of the APTA with section memberships in education and acute care. Also through the APTA, Loretta is a Certified Clinical Instructor.

$30 for PT/PTA Members
$10 for Student PT/PTA Members
$45 for Professional or Student Non-Member



This course is approved for 2.0 CCUs to meet the Ethics requirement.
