This course will define the concept of wellness and its role in rehabilitation. It will also provide an understanding of the 3 priority healthy lifestyles, which are physical activity, sound nutrition, and stress management. Furthermore, the course will provide information on how to facilitate wellness and the priority healthy lifestyles in healthcare.
• Define wellness and its multiple dimensions including emotional/mental, intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual.
• Define the determinants of health, fitness, and wellness with emphasis on the priority healthy lifestyles.
• Describe the components of health-related fitness and skill-related fitness.
• Describe the components of a comprehensive exercise program.
• Define macronutrients, micronutrients, and fiber and identify recommended daily intakes.
• Understand how to read a food label and evaluate nutritional adequacy of a food product based upon the food label.
• Examine stressors and describe various stress management techniques.
Ms. Debbie Henderson earned a BS in Occupational Therapy from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1992. After practicing for a decade, she returned to the classroom and earned an MBA from Rice University. Additionally, she is a Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist, and Performance Enhancement Specialist with credentialing through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Debbie currently works full time as a Senior Occupational Therapist at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital in Austin and her primary role focuses on treating individuals with spinal cord injury and stroke in an inpatient setting. She is also Saebo trained and serves as a splinting specialist and OT student coordinator for the hospital. In addition to working at St. David’s, Debbie is an adjunct instructor at the University of St. Augustine. She has been teaching the Wellness and Prevention course for DPT and MOT students since the summer of 2014. Throughout her career as an OT, Debbie has gained a wide range of experience by practicing in many different settings in many different geographical locations. From inpatient pediatric rehabilitation to outpatient hand therapy and from Miami to Denver, Debbie has provided OT services to help individuals improve their function and quality of life. In respect to health and wellness, Debbie strives to be a role model for living a healthy lifestyle. Since the age of 18, Debbie has consistently participated in weight lifting and other forms of exercise. In fact, she competed in body building at the age of 19 and is currently known in her gym as the small girl who does weighted pull-ups and dips.
