The practice of meditation is becomingly increasingly mainstream in western society.  This is thanks in part to the rapidly growing body of research that is beginning to provide tangible scientific evidence of its effectiveness for not only patients, but the entire general population as well -- and particularly healthcare workers.  Meditation has been shown to not only have psychological benefits, but also a myriad of physical benefits like pain reduction, improved cardiovascular function, and improved endocrine function.  While its routes are ancient and religious in nature, meditation is actually a simple yet challenging practice that everyone can benefit from from.  The purpose of this course is to highlight the research evidence supporting its use and to identify ways in which physical therapists can utilize meditation techniques and concepts both with themselves and their patients.

By the end of the course, participants will:
1. Describe the psychological and physical benefits of meditation
2. Practice mindfulness meditation for short durations
3. Utilize meditation techniques to reduce pain
4. Describe the current state of meditation research
5. Identify methods to apply mindfulness both with themselves and their patients
