OBJECTIVES:
1-Be familiar with the ethical guidelines as they pertain to the geriatric client as written in the APTA Code of Ethics for Physical Therapists, Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant for the PTA, and the AOTA Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics for the Occupational Therapist and Occupational Therapy Assistant.
2-Summarize pertinent legal guidelines for PTs, PTAs, OTs, and OTAs as identified in the Texas Practice Act/Rules that correlate with the ethical guidelines pertaining to the geriatric client.
3-Outline Ruth Purtilo’s “Six-Step Process of Ethical Decision-Making”.
4-Recognize signs of elder abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation.
5-Outline what to do when elder abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation is suspected.
6-Discuss how to collaborate with Adult Protective Services for positive outcomes.
7-In small groups, utilize Purtilo’s model to guide ethical decision-making for clinical case scenarios of elder abuse or other ethical considerations for the geriatric client.  

 
Speaker Bio:
Stephanie Williams, B. S. - Stephanie has been with Adult Protective Services for 11 years. 3 years as an APS caseworker and 8 as the Community Initiatives Specialist. Stephanie currently covers 23 counties and serve as the Volunteer Coordinator and APS Advisory Boards Liaison. Stephanie has a B.S. in Criminal Justice and Graduated from Grambling State University in 1998. Stephanie has a passion for advocating for seniors and educating the community on the many resources APS has to provide help & hope to vulnerable adults.
 
Carla Gleaton, P.T., M.Ed. – Carla has been a Physical Therapist for over 34 years and has been an Instructor and Program Director for the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Kilgore College for over 28 years.  She currently teaches the Ethics part of the PTA curriculum and has presented numerous seminars over various ethics topics around the East Texas area.  She is a former East Texas District Chair and has served as a delegate to the APTA House of Delegates for 4 years.  She has been an item-writer for many years for the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy working on the National Physical Therapy Examination for the PTA and is currently an item-writer coordinator.  She is currently pursuing her transitional Doctorate of Physical Therapy through Hardin-Simmons University.
