TPTA's History

The Growing Years
1950 - 1971

On August 18, 1950 "The Texas Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association" became incorporated by the State of Texas. There were no Chapter dues until Ruth Wood's tenure as President in 1950, although allocations were regularly received from APTA national dues.

The first invitation for Texas to host the National Conference was issued in 1931 but a Conference in the Lone Star State did not become a reality until 1953.  Those members from other Chapters who traveled to Dallas were entertained at a rodeo, wore western gear and learned a little bit about Texas bragging.

Beginning of Licensure

The Texas Chapter had been discussing the need for licensure for physical therapists in Texas since the early 1930's.  In June, 1971, Texas became the last State to obtain licensure for physical therapists.  A nine member Board of Examiners was appointed--they were selected from around the state so their knowledge of their respective areas would facilitate enforcement of the new Act. The first Board of PT Examiners were:

Ruth Wood--Ft. Worth (elected as Board Chair by the members)
Jim Dalton--Waco
Irving Barnett--San Antonio
Hilda Mckethan--Corpus Christi
J.D. Wendeborn--Laredo
Garland Picou--Lufkin
Eiizabeth Barkley--Houston
James Keister--Amarillo
Doris Porter--Dallas

All were appointed by the Governor of Texas with the advice and consent of the Texas Senate.
