Are you SET in your intervention? The Utilization of Body-Weight Off-Loaded Sling Exercise Therapy for Diagnostics and Rehabilitation of Musculoskeletal and Neurological Conditions (CAD)
Texas State University Department of Physical Therapy Round Rock Campus, Willow Hall
200 Bobcat Way
Round Rock, TX 78665
Monday, April 01, 2019, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM CDT
Category: District Meetings

Sling Exercise Therapy (SET) can be utilized in physical therapy practice for diagnostics and intervention. Static and dynamic activities in an unweighted environment allows for identification of impairments between the deep stabilizing musculature and superficial prime movers as well as the activation and endurance of deep stabilizers in a neutral position. The benefits of controlled loading with SET intervention include decreased pain and muscle relaxation, ease of utilization of open and closed chain exercises, increase in joint stability due to improved local neuromotor control of deep stabilizers and activation of multiple muscles within a fascial chain. 1CCU

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Define Sling Exercise Therapy.
2. Discuss the variance between single and multipoint suspension.
3. Explain the benefits of SET in the diagnostics and intervention of MSK and neurological conditions.

Speaker(s)
Angela J. Rich, PT, ScD Board Certified in Orthopaedics Board Certified Athletic Trainer Clinical Associate Professor, Texas State University. Angela Rich earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Southern Illinois University in 1984 and Physical Therapy from Texas State University in 1994. She completed her Doctor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Texas Tech University Health Science Center in 2011. She was awarded her Manual Therapy Certification from the International Academy of Orthopaedic Medicine in 2010 and Board Certification in Orthopaedics from ABPTS in 2015.Angela was in private practice for 16 years, specializing in orthopaedics and sports medicine. She is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in Texas State University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program with responsibilities of teaching in the Musculoskeletal series and the Clinic Director of the Texas State Physical Therapy Clinic. In 2017, Dr. Rich was recognized with the Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching for the Department of Physical Therapy and the College of Health Professions.

Michele Zink Harris, PT, CNP, RAS, has been a practicing Physical Therapist and educator since 1989. In her work with neurologic and orthopedic patients, she offers expertise in motion analysis, muscle imbalance, postural correction, core stabilization, asymmetry management, and kinetic chain restoration. Michele spent nine years as the senior therapist and director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program at St. David’s Rehabilitation Center. From there she formed the education department of a therapist-based assistive technology company focused on the development of seminars in the areas of wheeled mobility, seating and positioning, movement disorder and deformity management. Michele gained unique experience working with patients living through progressive neurological conditions.Since co-founding the Center for Healing and Regenerative Medicine (CHARM) in 2011, Michele’s tools have grown to include the Egosque method, Alexander technique, and Aston patterning for postural correction. She has advanced education in the use of Microcurrent Point Stimulation, Total Motion Release, Muscle Activation Technique, Postural Restoration (PRI), and Neurokinetic Therapy. In 2012, Michele brought the body-weight support, closed-chain suspension therapy referred to as Neurac (NEURomuscular ACtivation) to CHARM. The Neurac training method is effective in the re-establishment of local core stability and kinetic chain restoration for patients seeking improved stability with gait to optimal athletic performance. Michele is a Certified Neurac Practitioner and a certified Redcord Active Specialist. Michelle has served as an adjunct faculty member and clinical instructor for the Physical Therapy program at Texas State University since 1991 and has presented nationally for Medtronic Neurological, the National MS Society, Texas Physical Therapy Association, and a variety of local patient support organizations.
