Cognitive Domain:
• Knowledge: Define osteopenia and osteoporosis.
• Comprehension: Understand the pathophysiology of osteoporosis.
• Application: Use screening tools to identify patients who may be at risk for developing osteoporosis.
• Analysis: Analyze a bone density report to determine if a patient falls within a category of osteopenia, osteoporosis, or normal.
• Synthesis: Create an exercise plan that is appropriate for a patient with osteoporosis.
• Evaluation: Evaluate safe Activities of Daily Living (ADL) performance and body mechanics for patients with osteoporosis.

Affective Domain:
• Receiving: Be aware that osteopenia is a silent disease process.
• Valuing: Desire to be an advocate for educating patients about osteopenia.

Psychomotor Domain:
• Set: Instruct patients in achieving a body position that minimizes stress and strain in various common positions such as sitting, standing, and with lifting.
• Mechanism: Demonstrate exercises that are safe and efficient for improving bone density

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to educate learners on the patho-physiology of osteoporosis, risk factors for developing osteoporosis, screening tools used in assessing osteoporosis, and postural interventions to prevent the damaging effects of osteoporosis. The role of the rehabilitation specialist and specific management strategies of osteoporosis using safe and effective age and risk-factor specific exercise plans will be discussed.

Speaker Bio:

Suzanne Fox Trotter, PT, ScD, FAAOMPT is an instructor at the University of St. Augustine- Austin with primary teaching responsibilities including therapeutic exercise and massage. Suzanne received her Master’s of Physical Therapy from Emory University in 1995 and her ScD in Physical Therapy from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 2014. She has been practicing in the Austin area since 1995 with specific interest in outpatient orthopedics.
