Over 35% of individuals in Texas are lack adequate health care coverage to meet their most basic needs. In addition, access to health care and differences in care exist for socially disadvantaged populations. This talk will explore the complexities of local, regional, national, and international health care. Attendees will gain a heightened awareness of issues related to health disparities and access to care and discuss the changing landscape in the United States. Specific emphasis will be placed on access to rehabilitation services and include discussion on what we can do as individuals and a profession to mitigate the growing needs of disadvantaged populations.

By the end of the course, participants will:
• Define health disparities and explore factors that influence health disparities and access to rehab services.
• Understand how the model of health care in the United States differs from other developed countries and how it impacts access to care.
• Examine how our role as rehab professionals may change due to trends of the health care system in the United States.
• Discuss how prevention can be a mediator of demand for care and how rehab professionals can play a role in meeting this demand in an effort to mitigate disparities.
