At the completion of this session the attendee will be able to:

  1. Identify three main errors in clinical reasoning during the patient-client management process
  2. Describe the importance of a systematic approach to history taking to avoid errors in clinical reasoning
  3. Explain the funneling approach to questioning during the patient-client encounter
  4. Apply the principles of clinical reasoning to a simulated patient-client encounter


Dr. Petersen is an Assistant Professor at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Physical Therapy in San Antonio, TX, where he teaches Patient-Client Management courses. Prior to his appointment at UIW, he was serving in the military as the Graduate Program Director and Assistant Professor of the Army-Baylor University Doctoral Fellowship in Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Brigham Young University and holds a Master of Physical Therapy and Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy from Baylor University. He is a board certified clinical specialist in orthopaedics by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and a full fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists. He is an active researcher having published in JOSPT, European Spine Journal, and Military Medicine. He has lectured at numerous national and international physical therapy conferences on the topics of orthopaedic manual physical therapy evaluation and treatment, differential diagnosis, and clinical reasoning.
