This course is designed to educate therapists on the principles of adult oncology rehabilitation. Upon completion of this course, therapists should be able to identify side effects related to cancer treatments and associated cancer related functional impairments, have a basic understanding of oncology rehab examination/evaluation, and identify precautions and contraindications to oncology rehab treatment. 1CCU
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
• Gain knowledge of cancer treatments and their side effects • Understand the evaluation of various cancer related impairments • Understand precautions and contraindications to treatment • Review case studies
Speaker(s) BROOKE ELLIS, PT, DPT, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas in 2007. She received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas in 2010. Brooke is a member of The American Physical Therapy Association, Texas Physical Therapy Association and belongs to the Oncology and Orthopedic Chapters of the American Physical Therapy Association. Following graduation, Brooke worked as a Physical Therapist at Atrium Medical Center. She worked in the ICU, cardiac telemetry, medical surgery and pulmonary settings and gained experience with patients with neurological, cardiopulmonary, and orthopedic diagnoses. Brooke took a staff position at Texas Health Plano in January of 2012. Brooke has worked in the outpatient setting with a variety of patients with orthopedic impairments, neurologic impairments, and pediatric developmental conditions. She received specialty training in 2013 to work with cancer survivors and has helped to launch the Texas Health Oncology Rehab program at Texas Health Plano. Brooke was also a recipient of the Dorn Long Outstanding Clinical Educator award for 2014 presented by the Texas Consortium for Physical Therapy.
