A Primer on Multiple Sclerosis-Based Physical therapy Management (SED)

The primary objective of this course is to provide a contemporary approach to the physical therapy evaluation and management of patients with MS. This course will incorporate recent literature and evidence-based practice pattern trends in multiple sclerosis-related rehabilitation to guide physical therapists in managing patients with multiple sclerosis. 1CCU 

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Explain the relevant pathophysiology and clinical disease course of multiple sclerosis to physical therapists and physical therapist assistants;
2. Identify multiple sclerosis symptoms causing body structure and function impairments, activitylimitations, and participation restrictions that require specialized assessment and interventions by physical therapists;
3. Describe the role of physical therapy in developing and implementing strategies that will lead to sustained and improved functional outcomes in patients with multiple sclerosis; 4. Describe the evidence-based evaluation techniques and treatment strategies that can support thet argeted and personalized plans of care for patients with multiple sclerosis;
5. Provide appropriate education and resources to the patient with multiple sclerosis, their family,and their caregivers throughout the course of treatment.

Speaker(s)
Gregory Brusola, DPT, PhD, PT, MSCS is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Physical Therapy in the School of Health Professions (SHP) at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). He received a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology – Exercise Science from the University of Houston and his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Texas Woman’s University. Dr. Brusola is currently a PhD candidate in Physical Therapy (TWU). He has been a Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist since 2017 and holds clinical and research interests in the area of neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Brusola continues his clinical practice at TIRR Memorial Hermann serving those with neurological and complex conditions.
