TPTA Practice Committee Lecture Series: Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Individuals with Heart Failure and Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Patients Post-COVID

This course is relevant for therapist treating in the acute, subacute, outpatient and home health settings. The first part provides a review of the recently published clinical guidelines for treatment and management of individuals with heart failure with a review of the patholphysiology and exercise prescription and training intensity for these individuals in physical therapy.The second part of the course provides a review of patients post COVID with the following: differential diagnosis of the pulmonary conditions, triage, red/yellow flags. There will be coverage of post-intensive care syndrome with assessment guidelines/screening, interventions and treatment. There will be coverage of pulmonary complications post COVID with differential diagnosis between this and COPD, PT intervention and rehab. There will be coverage of the terms: Long Covid/Post-acute sequelae of covid/ Dysautonomia to include symptoms/risk factors, precautions and contraindications for exercise, and treatment planning. The last part of the webinar is very pertinent to PTs treating individuals with long COVID with a personal account of what this PT has dealt with in living with long COVID including becoming a founding member of the Long COVID Physio group that advocates for proper patient care and awareness. All of the information in this webinar is current evidence-based information for those PTs treating patient with heart failure and post-COVID. 8CCUs, 1 CCU Differential Diagnosis

Dr. Michael Shoemaker, DPT, PhD, GCS is a Professor of Physical Therapy at Grand Valley State University. He received a B.S. in Physical Education with an Exercise Science Specialization from Calvin College in 1996. In 1999 he earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Slippery Rock University, and earned his PhD in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences from Western Michigan University in 2012. He has been board-certified as a Geriatric Clinical Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties since 2002. His practice has been focused in cardiopulmonary and geriatric rehabilitation across multiple practice settings including acute care, long-term acute care, long-term care, subacute care and outpatient care, and he currently practices in the cardiothoracic critical care setting at the Spectrum Health Meijer Heart Center in Grand Rapids, MI.

Dr. Stephanie Kostsuca, PT, DPT, CCS received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Temple University in 2009 and became a Board Certified Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist in 2017. The majority of her clinical practice has been in the acute and intensive care unit settings, although she also has experience in outpatient cardiac and pulmonary rehab, as well as sub-acute rehab. She is the creator of the home- based pulmonary rehab program at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, and the lead PT for the Post-ICU clinic. Her specific clinical interests include critical care and post-icu related care and recovery. She has been a faculty member for the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Residency program at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare system since 2018 and became the director of the program in 2021.

Dr. Crystal Gluch, PT, DPT, CCS is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy and a practicing licensed physical therapist within the Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System in Ann Arbor, MI. Dr. Gluch earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from Grand Valley State University and completed a Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy Residency at the Ann Arbor VA. During her time as a resident, Dr. Gluch was recognized nationally by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) with the Outstanding Physical Therapist Resident Award. Dr. Gluch currently practices across patient care settings including critical care, acute care, subacute rehab, outpatient and virtual care. Dr. Gluch is involved in both facility and home-based cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs and is the PT Coordinator for a multi-disciplinary cardiac rehab program.

Dr. Ted DeChane, DPT is a Physical Therapist in Clinton Township, Michigan. He practices mainly in pediatrics, covering multiple settings including school-based, outpatient, and acute care. Ted became ill with COVID-19 in March of 2020 and continues to experience persistent symptoms. After connecting with other therapists afflicted with Long COVID, he became a founding member of the Long COVID Physio group and has since advocated for proper patient care and awareness.
