Rupal M Patel, PT, PhD is an Associate Professor in the School of Physical Therapy at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Houston, Texas. Dr. Patel teaches content related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) and the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) within the DPT curriculum at TWU. Dr. Patel has taught continuing education courses at various local, state, and national conferences as well as within educational programs and community organizations on DEI and SDOH in physical therapy (PT) practice. She has also appeared on several podcasts talking about DEI, SDOH and systemic racism in PT. Dr. Patel was the recipient of a research grant from the Academy of Leadership and Innovation or ALI (formerly HPA The Catalyst Section) to examine the validity, reliability, and utility of a PT SDOH survey tool. She was also the recipient of the APTA Minority Faculty Award for her dissertations study examining health disparities in diabetes prevention among understudied Asian Indian American population. Dr. Patel is a founding member of the APTA's Council on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Wellness; served as an elected member of the national APTA Nominating Committee and chair of the ANPT Advocacy and Consumer Affairs Committee. She currently serves as: the Federal Advocacy Liaison (FAL) for ANPT, a delegate from Texas to the APTA House of Delegates, the chair of the Texas Physical Therapy Association (TPTA) Bylaws Committee, a member of the TPTA DEI Task Force, a member of the APTA ALI Research Committee, aa key contact for the ALI Social Justice in Health Catalyst Group, and a board member of the Physical Therapy Learning Institute (PTLI) which hosts the annual Lynda D Woodruff Lecture on DEI in PT.
