Understanding the anatomy, mechanics, and manual therapy treatment concepts for common thoracic spine and rib conditions treated by physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapist assistants, and athletic trainers. This course will provide participants with a review of common disorders, theory and technique for basic joint assessment, joint mobilization/manipulation procedures, soft tissue mobilization, and neural considerations for the thoracic spine and ribs4CCUs 

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Review and palpate the anatomy of the bones, muscles, tendons in the thoracic spine and ribs;
2. Understand the mechanics of the bones, discs, muscles, tendons, and nerves in the thoracic spine and ribs;
3. Examine and treat the joints of the thoracic spine and ribs to improve joint mobility;
4. Understand muscle imbalances that setup the the need for stability and how to generate it in the thoracic spine and ribs;
5. Discuss practical applications of joint treatments for common thoracic spine and ribs diagnoses such as disc injuries, facet injuries, non-traumatic rib injuries, sternocostal injuries, and more.

Speaker(s)
David Midaugh, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT  received his DPT in 2011 from Texas State University - San Marcos. He completed his orthopedic residency and fellowship in manual therapy in 2015. He founded El Paso Manual Physical Therapy in 2014, a private-pay outpatient manual therapy clinic focused on helping El Pasoans avoid unnecessary surgery, injections and pain medications. He taught orthopedics at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2016-2017. He has trained numerous physical therapy students and fellows in the manual therapy specialty.

8:00 am Lecture: Overview of anatomy and mechanics of the thoracic spine and ribs.
9:00 am Lab: Palpation of important landmarks, joints & soft tissue
10:00 am Break
10:30 am Lecture: Overview of common diagnoses, indications/contraindications for manual therapy treatment
11:30 am Lab: Joint examination & mobilization/manipulation lab
12:15 pm Discuss diagnoses; questions
12:30 pm End

Additional Information and Registration
CCUs are only issued to PTs and PTAs. In order to receive credit, you must be present for the full course and sign in and out at the time of the meeting. After the course complete the course evaluation. Link to the evaluation in is your confirmation email. You must follow all instructions, including completing registration. Credits will be issued after verifying attendance and completion of evaluation no later than December 15, 2022. Please allow until then for processing. You will log in to your TPTA member account or the account used when completing the evaluation. Please wait until after that date to contact TPTA if your CCUs have not posted on your transcript. Instructions for retrieving will be emailed to you.
