Direct Access: The Legislative Process and You
Monday, January 23, 2023, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM CDT
Category: District Meetings

Despite overwhelming evidence for the safety and efficacy of primary and conservative health care provided by physical therapists, legal and societal barriers persist to restrict patient access to physical therapy services. These barriers have resulted in increased costs and delayed or worsened health outcomes for the public as well as increased administrative and practice burdens for physical therapy providers. Unfettered direct access to physical therapy for the public is the only solution, and it is long overdue. 1 CCU

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Interpret the current laws in the state of Texas regarding patient access to physical therapy;
2. Describe the Texas legislative process required for bills to become laws and physical therapy scope of practice to be improved;
3. Discuss strategies for individual, local, and statewide coordination of direct access advocacy.

Speaker(s)
Dr. Peyton Sykes is an Assistant Professor at the University of St. Augustine for Health Science (USAHS), Austin, Texas. He has earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2009, his Doctor of Physical Therapy from USAHS in 2014, and his Doctor of Education in Learning Theory and Organizational Change from Baylor University in 2022. He has been a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) since 2018 and has clinical experience in outpatient orthopedics, acute care travel, and cash-based mobile orthopedic physical therapy. In 2019, Peyton became involved in the legislative efforts for direct patient access to physical therapy treatment without restrictions in Texas. To assist in the Texas Physical Therapy Association’s efforts, he created a public facing social media movement called Physical Therapy By Choice aimed at informing and unifying both physical therapists and the public in direct access efforts. To date, that movement has over 1.6 thousand followers. His goal is to continue creating opportunities for effective, grassroots, student and public involved advocacy for patient rights to unfettered access to physical therapy.
