It is imperative that TPTA members understand the legislative process, learn how to effectively lobby, and build meaningful relationships with our legislators and key stakeholders, so that we may protect and advance our profession at state and federal levels. 2CCUs

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the basic legislative process as it pertains to how a bill becomes law.
  2. Describe the principles and key constructs in building relationships with legislators and keys to effective legislative lobbying.
  3. List current legislative issues affecting the physical therapy profession at the state and federal levels and their impact on the physical therapy profession.
  4. Understand the importance of member involvement in protecting the profession and describe numerous ways to get involved.

Speaker(s)
Linda John, PT, is a practicing physical therapist contracting to outpatient physical therapy clinics around the North Dallas area. She has been an active member of APTA since 1997, being directly involved in legislative advocacy for the past 19 years. She served as Government Affairs Chair and Federal Affairs Liaison for the Oklahoma Physical Therapy chapter, with efforts focused on attaining direct patient access, before moving to North Texas in 2010. Linda presently serves as the PT-PAC Ambassador and Federal Affairs Liaison for the Texas chapter of the APTA, and has made numerous trips to Capitol Hill to lobby Congress on the issues of Medicare Direct Access, Repeal of the Therapy Cap, and student loan reimbursement. As a result of her efforts on the Hill and solidifying a strong, working relationship with leadership in the House Health Committees, Linda was presented with the APTA Federal Government Affairs Leadership Award in 2018. During her tenure in this arena, Linda has organized political fundraisers and presented at state and district meetings to educate members about and encourage involvement in the legislative process as it relates to the physical therapy profession.
