From Breakdown to Build Up: Comprehensive Management of the Injured Runner (SED)

This course seeks to provide a variety of speakers and topics to prepare clinicians to providing comprehensive care for the injured runner. This course will include instruction on biomechanics and evaluation of a runner before detailing treatment considerations. As an overview, treatment considerations covered in this course will include running shoes and orthotics, manual therapy and therapeutic exercise suggestions, and strength training for prevention and performance enhancement.. 8CCUs 

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Identify common injuries in runners
2. Identify biomechanical abnormalities and risk factors and relate them to specific injuries-Patient will be able to discuss evaluation and presentation of various running injuries
3. Understand the impact of abnormal foot mechanics in runners vs. the general patient population
4. Demonstrate the ability to properly access pathologic foot or LE mechanics which indicate that a runner is a candidate for orthotics
5. Understand the benefits of orthotics in injury prevention, treatment, and performance enhancement
6. Understand the efficacy of prescribing orthotics in the course of injury treatment.
Additional: Participants will understand the rationale between prescribing off the shelf or custom orthotics.-Participants will be able to evaluate orthotics for effectiveness.-Participants will understand the important relationship between the shoe and the orthotic.-Participants will be able to prescribe proper treatment plan for successfully weaning runners into orthotics.-Participants will be able to discuss the pros and cons of orthotics confidently with their runner patients.Clinical Interventions:-Patient will understand the demands of running on the body and current treatment approaches in consideration-Patient will be familiar with potential manual therapy interventions for the injured runner-Patient will be able to prescribe therapeutic exercise to address strength/stability, mobility, and motor control-Patient will be familiar with tissue based treatment considerations Strength Training: -Participants will understand the performance pyramid -Participants will be able to discuss the specific application of strength in running-Participants will understand the relationship between strength and injury rates in runners-Participants will be able to demonstrate progressions of exercises for developing strength in running

Speaker(s)
Kimberly Gandler, MS currently serves as the Coordinator for Human Performance at the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute.  In addition to her leadership duties, she continues to serve as a sports biomechanist and exercise physiologist for the Institute where she practices alongside our physical therapists and physicians. 

Jaime Aparicio PT, DPT, SCS, FAAOMPT, CSCS, USATF-1 is board-certified in sports physical therapy and a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapists.  His clinical interests include pathologies of the foot and ankle, operative and non-operative management of endurance athletes, and biomechanical analysis and treatment of runners.

Laurie Johnson, PT  has been President and Co-owner of Affiliates in Physical Therapy, Inc. since 2000. While primarily a consultant at this time she has been a practicing physical therapist with Affiliates providing comprehensive out-patient physical therapy services and sports performance enhancement.

Courtney Bohne PT, DPT, SCS, OSC, FAAOMPT received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Florida in 2013. In order to advance her skills and specialize in the field of sports physical therapy, Courtney completed the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Sports Physical Therapy residency in 2013-2014 and became a Board Certified Sports Specialist in 2015. 

Steven Islas PT, DPT, CSCS received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Texas Woman’s University in 2018 and is currently pursuing post graduate training through Institute of Athlete Regeneration to specialize in the field of sport and orthopedic physical therapy. As a physical therapist at Houston Methodist Sugar Land, Steven is passionate about working with athletes and their goals of returning to sport.

Charlie Gremillion, MS, SCCC has more than 20 years in human performance as an athlete, scientist and coach. He currently serves as a strength and conditioning coach with Athlete Training + Health (ATH) for the Houston Dynamo Youth Academy.

9am-10am - Lecture on Biomechanics and Relationship to Specific Injuries (Kim Gandler)
10am-11am - Lab for Gait Analysis and Identifying Biomechanical Abnormalities (Kim Gandler / Jaime Aparicio)
11am-12:30pm - Lecture on Running Shoes and Orthotics (Laurie Johnson)
12:30pm-1:30pm - Lunch break **Light lunch provided

AFTERNOON SESSIONS:
1:30pm-3:30pm - Lecture on Clinical Interventions for the Running Athlete (Courtney Bohne / Steven Islas)
3:30pm-5pm - Lecture/Lab on Strength Training for Injury Prevention and Performance Enhancement in Running

Please attend in active wear and appropriate shoes in order to participate in lab sessions.
