Exercise Considerations for the Overhead Athlete (NTD)

As Physical Therapists, we all see overhead athletes or patients who are suffering from shoulder or elbow discomfort. This course will help identify common pathologies seen in the overhead athlete and provide evidence based treatment interventions that can be applied to shoulder and elbow patients of all ages. 2CCUs

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Identify and understand common injuries seen in the overhead athlete.
2. Discuss common surgical interventions and special considerations for return to sport.
3. Learn and discuss sport specific exercise prescription and neuromuscular retraining for overhead athletes.
4. Discuss the importance of lower extremity and core in regards to throwing athletes.
5. Identify specific criteria to determine a safe return to sport.Identify current trends in adolescent sport and injury prevention strategies.

Speaker(s)
Brett Holland, PT, DPT, CSCS graduated from the University of Texas at Tyler with a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Kinesiology, and earned a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Texas Woman’s University in 2014. While attending UT Tyler, Brett was a two-time All-American pitcher on the baseball team, setting numerous team and conference records. He was drafted after his junior season by the Oakland Athletics(2008) and then drafted and signed by the San Diego Padres in 2009. Brett spent one season with the Padres organization before having shoulder surgery. Rehabilitation following surgery brought forward a new passion for physical therapy and helping young athletes return to sport. Prior to joining ATI, Brett was employed by Houston Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, where he worked closely with the team physicians for the Houston Astros and Rice University. He had the privilege of treating numerous overhead athletes from the adolescent to professional level. Brett also worked with the head athletic trainer for the Houston Astros to develop a shoulder maintenance program for throwing athletes. Brett has presented multiple lectures targeted towards treatment of overhead athletes. Brett has been published in the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation for a study entitled: The Utilization of Interval Throwing Programs in the Physical Therapy Setting – A Cross-Sectional Survey. Brett is the Co-Owner/Founder and Executive Director of Content/Strategy at 5ToolSport, a sport specific continuing education company, that was started in 2018.
