This course aims to improve understanding and competency for physical therapists to identify risks and symptoms associated with concussions as well as appropriate assessment of patients with concussions. This course also is designed to provide comprehensive information regarding evidence based treatments, return to activity considerations, and referral considerations for the practicing physical therapist. 8CCUs 

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Participants will recognize and be familiar with common anatomy related to concussion, specifically relating to the vestibular system and brain structures involved.
2. Participants will understand and identify the functional significance of the pathophysiology of concussion and apply this knowledge to appropriate treatment/education.
3. Participants will identify the clinical trajectories of concussion to properly formulate plan of care or specialist referrals.
4. Participants will understand proper PT management in the acute vs. chronic phase of concussion symptoms.
5. Participants will identify subjective information that indicate a cervical dysfunction that contribute to post concussive symptoms.
6. Participants will acknowledge the benefit of using standardized outcome measures to determine symptomolgy and clinical presentation.
7. Participants will verbalize the similarities and differences in presentation of whiplash vs post concussion syndrome.
8. Participants will review the relevant anatomy of the cervical spine as it relates to concussion.
9. Participants will observe and practice a systematic top down approach to assessing the cervical spine for dysfunction contributing to persistent pain in patients following concussion.
10. Participants will observe and practice special tests that differentiate cervicogenic dysfunction from the other aspects of dysfunction in the concussed patient.
11. Participants will discuss potential treatment options including manual therapy, therapeutic exercise prescription, and advanced progressions for return to sport in the concussed athlete.
12. Participants will identify subjective data that indicate a physiologic dysfunction that contribute to post concussive symptoms.
13. Participants will observe the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test assessing the physiologic system for dysfunction contributing to persistent pain in patients following concussion and will recall the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test termination criteria.
14. Participants will discuss the exercise prescription following the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test.
15. Participants will be able to identify common causes of dizziness after concussion.
16. Participants will be able to identify appropriate assessments for vestibulo-ocular PCS.
17. Participants will be able to identify the 4 treatment theories for vestibular rehabilitation.
18. Participants will be familiar with other potential diagnoses related to Post Concussion Syndrome.
19. Participants will appreciate the interdisciplinary team approach to successful concussion management.
20. Participants will acquire knowledge regarding return to learn, work, sport and drive.

Speaker(s)
Christopher Gaines, PT, DPT, SCS, FAAOMPT  is a Board Certified Sports Clinical Specialist and Clinical Faculty Mentor with Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Clear Lake. He received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2013 from Texas Woman's University - Houston before participating in the Physical Therapy Sports Residency program with Houston Methodist in 2014. He has since completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy with OPTIM and enjoys now teaching in the fellowship program. Chris has also been a speaker several times with Houston Methodist and a guest lecturer for Texas Woman's University. With Houston Methodist his interests and specialties include Concussion rehabilitation, athletic spine rehabilitation, CrossFit athletes, and tactical athletes.

Christopher Shields, PT, DPT is a sports physical therapist with a specialty in concussions for Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute in the Texas Medical Center. He has been with Memorial Hermann IRONMAN since 2015 and currently serves as the Coordinator for Vestibular/Concussion Rehabilitation throughout the Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation (SM&R) system. He has also continued to work as a physical therapist with Memorial Hermann TIRR since 2009 where he has treated a variety of neurological conditions including TBI, vestibular, and balance dysfunctions in relevance to this course. He received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Georgia in 2009 and has since gone on to receive competency certifications in cervicogenic dizziness and vestibular rehabilitation. Dr. Shields has spoken numerous times in the Houston area about concussion management and is excited to share his expertise with this course.

Purvi Vora, PT, DPT, C/NDT works as an advanced clinical specialist at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus in the Sports Medicine and Orthopedics PT Department. She joined Texas Children’s in 2012 and has worked in all areas of outpatient pediatric rehabilitation. Her current areas of expertise are in treatment of pediatric vestibular dysfunction and treatment of the pediatric patient with post-concussive syndrome. In 2015, Purvi attended the APTA's certification and competency course in Vestibular Rehabilitation and Balance Therapy at Emory University and became Texas Children's first vestibular physical therapist specialist. Prior to working at Texas Children's Hospital, she worked primarily in acute adult neurology and neurosurgery, including neurological ICU, and consulting in an outpatient neurological work-up unit. In 2012, she completed the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association's certification course in the Treatment of Adults with Hemiplegia. Lora Walker, PT, MSPTLora Walker has her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Texas Woman’s University with a minor in Dance. In 2003, she received a Master’s of Science in Physical Therapy from Texas Woman’s University here in Houston. Lora further earned a Neurologic Certified Specialist certification from the American Physical Therapy Association in 2007 and also holds Certification in Vestibular Rehabilitation.

Gillian Woolridge, DO is a board-certified physician specializing in non-surgical orthopedics, sports medicine and primary care. She joined Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at Clear Lake in 2018. Dr. Wooldridge’s areas of expertise include the diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic and musculoskeletal injuries, chronic orthopedic conditions, joint pain, concussion and fracture management and general medical conditions. She also provides sports team and event coverage for local high schools as a representative of Houston Methodist. Wooldridge earned her medical degree from the University of North Texas Health Science Center - Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed family medicine residency at Houston Methodist in the Texas Medical Center. She completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.

Lora Walker, PT, MSPT holds certification in vestibular rehabilitation. She treats both orthopedic and neurologic patients for Harris Health, where she is also a member of the Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Faculty. She has been a physical therapist in the Houston area since 2003 after earning her Master's in Physical Therapy from Texas Woman's University - Houston. She later earned a Neurologic Certified Specialist (NCS) certification from the American Physical Therapy Association in 2007.
