Fundamental Movement Strategies for the Neck, Thorax & Shoulders is a two-day introductory course that is highly relevant for physical therapists & physical therapist assistants. It advocates using integrated movement principles as our preferred choice in exercise prescription. Themes include definitions of integrated movement, classifications of integrated relationships into global and differentiated, and discussion on what constitutes optimal movement. Ways of facilitating patient proprioceptive self-awareness are explored and teaching techniques are articulated in ways that blend muscle/joint/fascia balancing with postural, ergonomic and body mechanics instructions. Manuals are provided and studies are cited. Lab sessions include experiential movement, partner observations, facilitation techniques, discussion of indications/contra-indications, modifications & discussion of clinical relevance. 16CCUs

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Define Regional Interdependence & Specificity Principle
2. List three primary differences between Static Integration & Dynamic Integration exercise
3. Define the difference between Global & Differentiated movement or postural patterns—list two examples of each in the neck and shoulder girdles
4. List three principles of Optimal Movement and give examples of common cervical and shoulder girdle clinical presentations resulting from sub-optimal movement
5. Explain the benefits of informational exercise strategies—use of constraints, change of venue, reciprocating movements, goldilocks principle and link to functional context
6. Identify long-term habitual movement and postural mistakes and correlate to cervical disc/joint degeneration, cervico-genic headaches, shoulder girdle myofascial syndromes, thoracic outlet syndrome, whiplash/MVA and more
