High-velocity, low-amplitude manipulation (HVLA) is an evidence-based intervention utilized for numerous orthopedic conditions and the keystone of several clinical prediction rules. These techniques are efficient, increase the efficacy of intervention and essential in cost containment of a neuromusculoskeletal condition. Well known for their biomechanical effects, the resulting neurophysiological mechanisms are paramount in the success of the application. This four-hour hands-on lab will provide the essential HVLA manipulation techniques that will enhance successful outcomes for both orthopedic and neurological patients. 4CCUs

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

1.Discuss the evidence-based research on the utilization of HVLA manipulations as a component of intervention for the orthopedic and neurological patient.
2.List the indications and contraindications of utilization of HVLA techniques.
3.Demonstrate the proper set-up, positioning, body mechanics and application of HVLA manipulations for spine and extremities.
4.Describe the anticipated outcome from a properly administered HVLA trust technique.
5.Discuss the utilization of HVLA manipulations as a potential component of the patient plan of care.

Speaker(s)
Angela J. Rich, PT, ScDBoard Certified Orthopaedic Specialist and Athletic Trainer is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Texas State University Round Rock. She a member of the orthopedic team, teaching in the Musculoskeletal Series since 2015 and is the director of the Texas State Physical Therapy Clinic. Dr. Rich received her Bachelor of Science degrees in athletic training in 1984 from Southern Illinois University and physical therapy from Texas State in 1994. She completed her Doctor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in 2011. Dr. Rich received the Excellence in Teaching Awards at the department and college level for Texas State in 2016. Certified in manual therapy and a board certified orthopaedic specialist, her interests are in the treatment of orthopedic and sports injuries and conditions with a focus on movement impairments.

Jacob L Garza, PT, DPT,Fellow of the American Academy of Manual Physical Therapists is a Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Physical Therapy at Texas State University Round Rock. He is a member of the orthopedic team, assisting in the Musculoskeletal, Anatomy, and Patient Care Series since 2018. Dr. Garza received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 2007 from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor. He received his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Texas State University in 2011 and completed his fellowship in orthopaedics from the Manual Therapy Institute in 2016. His interests include manual therapy and movement impairments to address orthopedic conditions.
