We have collected a panel of speakers to help detail the recent changes to the Texas physical therapy practice act, specifically related to direct access to physical therapy, and how it might be applied in different practice settings. 1CCU 

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Identify recent changes in the Texas physical therapy practice act.
2. Cite Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners resources interpreting recent Texas physical therapy practice act changes.
3. Recall the requirements necessary for a physical therapist to treat a patient without a referral from a physician in Texas.
4. Discuss how recent Texas physical therapy practice act changes should be applied in different practice settings.
5. Generate ideas about how recent Texas physical therapy practice act changes might be applied to their current practice setting.

Speaker(s)
Dana Tew, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT specializes in orthopaedic physical therapy. His experience includes clinical management of patients with both acute and chronic orthopedic injuries in the outpatient environment. His practice is focused on integration of manual therapy and exercise into a holistic, evidence-based and biopsychosocial approach to physical therapy treatment. He is the residency manager of Harris Health System’s Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program. He was honored by the Texas Physical Therapy Association Southeastern District, as clinical instructor of the year in 2013. He is also a guest lecturer at Texas Woman’s University and has presented at multiple conferences. He has served locally for the Southeastern District, as a delegate for the TPTA, and nationally on the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education credentialing council for the APTA. He also recently became the Vice President for the TPTA.

Colette Pientok, PT, DPT is an APTA Board Certified Orthopaedic Specialist and is certified in Dry Needling. She earned a BS in PT from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1984 and completed her post professional Doctorate of Physical Therapy through the College of St. Scholastica in 2015. With over 34 years of experience as a physical therapist, Colette continues to work in patient care and serves as manager of education for Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. A manual therapist with a functional approach to treatment, Colette focuses on resolution of joint and soft tissue contributions to motion loss and/or pain in conjunction with ensuring proper muscle recruitment patterns and a progression of functional exercises. Colette encourages patient involvement in treatment and goal setting to improve patient compliance and functional outcomes for successful return to daily activities and leisure activities/sports. Colette is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association and is a member of the Houston Marathon Medical Committee.

Rupal Patel, PT, PhD is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Marketing for TWU Houston School of Physical Therapy. Her primary areas of expertise include health promotion, lifestyle modification, and diabetes risk factor reduction. She completed her PhD in Health Promotion and Wellness from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in 2016. She has been very active within the TPTA and APTA. She has recently been serving on APTA Nominating Committee, as delegate-at-large from Texas for the APTA House of Delegates, and Chair of the Bylaws Committee for the TPTA.

Roy Rivera, Jr., PT, PhD, DPT, MCHES is the owner of Crom Rehabilitation in Houston, TX. I on to apply to physical therapy school. He has completed both a DPT from Rocky Mountain University of Health as well as PhD in Health Studies degree from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX. He is also a Master Certified Health Education Specialist through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. He is excited to provide the small business and private practice perspective on direct access to physical therapy in Texas for this panel.

Jessica West, PT, DPT is a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Oncologic Physical Therapy. Her areas of expertise include oncologic rehabilitation, acute pediatric rehabilitation, early mobilization in the intensive care unit. She recently became the Supplemental Learning Lab Coordinator for TWU Houston. She serves as the Government Affairs Liaison for the TPTA SED Board and was instrumental in bringing this panel together.
