At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Review the physical therapist's role in Primary Care and Direct Access per the American Physical Therapy Association's Guide to Physical Therapist Practice and Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners.
2. Apply medical screening techniques to traditional examination procedures that result in a comprehensive examination scheme for all patients/clients across the lifespan.
3. Perform physical examination techniques and medical screening procedures for the cardiac system, pulmonary system, abdomen, lumbar, cervical, upper, and lower quarter.
4. Utilize differential diagnosis to discern normal from abnormal findings in the screening physical examination procedures.
5. Recognize signs and symptoms from health history and screening that necessitate immediate medical referral when analyzing a case scenario.

Speaker(s)
Joan Potter-Brunet PT, DPT, MS has been a physical therapist for 27 years. She has been teaching at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center DPT Program for the past 20 years. She is currently the assistant program director on the Amarillo campus. She has clinical experience in the acute care, skilled nursing, inpatient rehabilitation and OP settings. She has been involved in and or coordinating the DPT entry level students’ History and Systems Screening course for the past 10 years. She has also taught the Screening and Differential Diagnosis course for the transitional DPT pathway at Texas Tech. She received her BS from West Texas State University in Biology/Chemistry in 1990, a BS in physical therapy from UT Southwestern in Dallas in 1991, her Master’s in Interdisciplinary Studies from West Texas A & M in 2002, her DPT from A.T. Still University in 2010, and is currently getting her EdD in Higher Education Administration from Texas Tech University.

7:45-8:00: Registration/sign in and welcome
8:00-9:30: Physical Therapist Role in Screening, Review of cardiac and pulmonary system, screening techniques, normal/abnormal findings
9:30-9:40: Break
9:40-10:30: Lab: Practice and perform cardiac and pulmonary screening techniques
10:30-11:30: Review head, neck and upper quarter screening, normal and abnormal findings
11:30-11:40: Break
11:40-12:30: Lab: Practice and perform head/neck and upper quarter screening/case scenarios/when to treat, refer and treat, or refer
12:30-1:30: Lunch
1:30-2:30: Lower Quadrant red flags, Review of GI and GU system and red flags, LQ fracture screening, screening techniques, normal/abnormal findings
2:30-3:20: Lab: Practice and perform general inspection, abdominal screen
3:20-3:30: Break
3:30-4:00: Review lower extremity screening; vascular, musculoskeletal, neurologic
4:00-4:55: Lab: Practice and perform lower extremity screening, normal and abnormal findings/case scenarios/ when to treat, refer and treat, or refer
4:55-5:00: Wrap up—questions and course evaluations
