Sports Nutrition Overview for Physical Therapists (SED)

This course seeks to provide physical therapists an overview of important concepts in sports nutrition. This course will provide more information to consider with athletic patients regarding hydration, injury nutrition, pre/during/post exercise fueling, supplements, nutrition and bone health, and relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S). 8CCUs

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the different roles and needs of protein, carbohydrates and fat.
2. Describe fluid needs including signs and symptoms of hypohydration and hyperhydration.
3. Understand the role each of the macronutrients play in performance, bone health and formation.
4. Identify supplements that can have a positive impact on bone health and optimize performance.
5. Identify nutrition strategies for endurance training and racing.
6. Explain the different types of fuel used during an endurance race, including how to make food-based sources: potato and rice energy bites.
7. Differentiate nutrition needs according to the stage of injury recovery.
8. Identify common nutrition concerns regarding injury rehabilitation.
9. Calculate protein needs according to the stage of injury.
10. Select the appropriate supplement according to recovery needs.
11. Describe the top five dietary supplements for sports performance.
12. List appropriate third party testing resources to ensure supplement safety.
13. Describe RED-s and its health effects. 14. Define how RED-s may apply to Physical Therapy Scenarios.

Speaker(s)
Brett Singer MS, RD, CSSD, LD holds a BS in nutrition from Texas Christian University and an MS in Nutrition from Texas Woman's University. Currently, he is a sports dietitian and counsels athletes of all sports and levels. He has also served as the sports dietitian at Houston Baptist University, Houston Dynamo, Sugar Land Skeeters Baseball, Athlete Training and Health NFL Combine and Pro Day Camp, and as a consulting dietitian for Gatorade Sports Science Institute. Through Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitian Association, he was selected as one of ten mentors nationally for the 2017 Gatorade Sports Nutrition Immersion Program. In addition to his role at Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute, he is an adjunct professor in the Master of Athletic Training Program at University of Houston.

Molly Wong Vega MS, RD, CSSD, LD earned a bachelor’s in nutritional sciences from Texas A&M University and a master’s in nutrition from Texas Woman’s University. Molly has spent the majority of her career working with children and adolescents. She is a former competitive swimmer and now enjoys competing in triathlons. Molly currently works as both a Sports Dietitian at the Memorial Herman IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute as well as a Pediatric Renal Dietitian at Texas Children's Hospital.

Kyla Cross MS, MPH, RD, LD was selected as a 2019 Gatorade Sports Nutrition Immersion Program Fellow. Prior to the fellowship she was a Sports Performance Intern and Research Assistant at the University of Michigan. Kyla is a registered dietitian and has two Master's degrees focused in Dietetics and Clinical Nutrition Services from University of Michigan. She received her Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from Illinois State University.

Melanie Battaglia MS, RD, LD is a Registered Dietitian (RD), has a bachelor degree in nutrition from Saint Louis University (SLU), and a Master degree in Clinical Nutrition from Rush University Medical Center. As a former college athlete, she has first-hand experience advising and living out the importance of nutrition on athletic performance. Melanie became intrigued as a young swimmer as to how diet affected her swimming performance. As a college athlete, she applied what she learned in dietetics to her training and monitored her own nutrition to bring out her personal best performance in practice and competition. For four years Melanie was a Division One swimmer at SLU. She started competing in triathlons in high school each summer to avoid swimming burnout and mix up her training. She has continued competing in triathlons ever since and has competed at USAT nationals three times.
