Striking Sports: Different Types, Common Musculoskeletal Injuries, and Rehabilitation for the Physical Therapist (SED)
Tuesday, September 15, 2020, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM CDT
Category: District Meetings

With the increasing popularity of mixed martial arts and the UFC in the last 5-10 years there is a growing interest nationally and globally in martial arts participation. The number  of mixed martial arts and kickboxing schools continues to grow each year and it is important that we as physical therapists are knowledgeable in both the injuries seen and the physical demands required to perform these sports. The purpose of this presentation is to identify the differences between the sports of boxing, kickboxing, and muay thai and the common musculoskeletal  injuries that occur within the three. The secondary purpose of this presentation is to discuss rehabilitation concepts specific to the striking athlete. 1CCU

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Correctly identify the three main biomechanical differences between and requirements of boxing, kickboxing, and muay thai athletes;
2. Appropriately discuss the common musculoskeletal injuries in striking athletes;
3. Discuss the various aspects of rehabilitation of a striking athlete.
