This course will give a bri ef overview about what advocacy is and how the legislative process works. T his course will also provide information about current legislative issues a ffecting the PT profession in Texas and the national level. Finally, this c ourse will help prepare PTs, PTAs, and students for the upcoming Texas Legi slative Day 2023. 1CCU

A
llison Smith PT, DPT, PhD is a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical
Specialist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physi
cal Therapists. She recently completed her PhD in Physical Therapy from Tex
as Woman's University in December 2021. She previously graduated with a bac
helor’s degree in health sciences and minor in psychology in 2011 from Purd
ue University, where she was also a NCAA Division I swimmer. She attended W
ashington University in St. Louis and graduated with her doctor of physical
therapy degree in 2014. Following PT school she was accepted into the Harr
is Health System orthopedic physical therapy residency program, which she c
ompleted in 2015. Allie became board certified as an orthopedic clinical sp
ecialist in 2016. In 2017 she completed the OPTIM manual therapy fellowship
and became a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical
Therapists. She was awarded with Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award in 2
017. Allie has previously served locally for the Southeastern District of t
he Texas Physical Therapy Association as the Governmental Affairs Chair and
nationally representing Texas as a delegate in the House of Delegates. She
continues to be a clinical instructor and mentor at Harris Health System a
nd is involved in the orthopedic residency program. She also assists with t
he orthopedics module for the neurologic residency. She previously was adju
nct faculty with Texas Woman's University from 2018-2020.
