Speaker(s)
Sharon Dunn, OCS, ABPTS, PT, PhD graduated in 1987 with a
BS in Physical Therapy, a MHS in 1996, and a PhD in Cellular Biology and An
atomy in 2006, all from LSUHSC in Shreveport. Sharon is a board certified s
pecialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, and currently serves as Associat
e Professor in the DPT program and Chair of the Rehabilitation Sciences Dep
artment at LSUHSC. In addition, she developed a residency program for Ortho
paedic Physical Therapy in 2008, which has since produced 22 graduates. Sha
ron’s service to her professional organization began when she was a student
, and most recently she was elected as President of the APTA. Her passions
are advocacy, member engagement, and our profession’s potential to add grea
t value to a disrupted health delivery system.
Janet Bezner, P
T, DPT, PhD, FAPTA is an Associate Professor in the Department of
Physical Therapy at Texas State University. Janet teaches, conducts researc
h on physical activity and provides service to the university community, in
cluding serving as a Faculty Senator. She received her bachelor’s degree in
physical therapy at the University of Texas Medical Branch, her master’s d
egree from Texas Woman’s University, degree PhD in health education from th
e University of Texas and a DPT degree from Rocky Mountain University of He
alth Professions. Prior to joining Texas State in August 2014, she was Vice
President of Education, Governance and Administration at the American Phys
ical Therapy Association (APTA) and prior to that, senior vice president fo
r PeakCare, Inc., a health care technology firm, where she managed the deve
lopment of a wellness and prevention software and video library aimed at em
ployers to assist in decreasing health care costs associated with illness a
nd injury at work. Janet spent 7 years teaching physical therapy at Southwe
st Texas State University (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, Texas
, and has practiced in a variety of health care settings, including hospita
ls, home health, long-term care and corporate wellness. Janet served on APT
A’s Board of Directors prior to joining its staff, she is a Catherine Worth
ingham Fellow of the APTA, and a recipient of the Lucy Blair Service Award.
She currently serves as the Chief Delegate of the Texas Chapter and coordi
nates the key contact network for the chapter. Bezner is a graduate of the
2009 Leadership Alexandria program, is a licensed Franklin Covey facilitato
r, and a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach. She is an expe
rienced speaker and facilitator on topics related to leadership, personal d
evelopment, strategic planning, and health promotion and wellness.
Laurayne P. Hurst, PT, DPT, Med, CLT-LANA has a cumulative experi
ence of 40+ years in leadership, teaching, counseling, rehabilitation and p
ublic service. She serves in various public and professional committees: In
tegrative Health and Nutrition Coach, Certified Lymphedema Therapist NMC, N
ational Lymphedema Network Affiliative, Delegate to APTA House of Delegates
, Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee. She got her
Doctor of Physical Therapy at Rosalind Franklin School of Science and Medi
cine, North Chicago, Illinois; Certified Lymphedema Therapist – LANA Certif
ication; Norton School of Lymphatic Studies – Certified Lymphedema Therapis
t; Master of Education with emphasis on community counseling - Stephen F. A
ustin State University; Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy - The Unive
