This course aims to improve understanding and competency for
physical therapists to identify risks and symptoms associated with concuss
ions as well as appropriate assessment of patients with concussions. This c
ourse also is designed to provide comprehensive information regarding evide
nce based treatments, return to activity considerations, and referral consi
derations for the practicing physical therapist. 8CCUs
At the conclusion of the course, partic
ipants will be able to:
1. Participants will recognize a
nd be familiar with common anatomy related to concussion, specifically rela
ting to the vestibular system and brain structures involved.
2. Partic
ipants will understand and identify the functional significance of the path
ophysiology of concussion and apply this knowledge to appropriate treatment
/education.
3. Participants will identify the clinical trajectories of
concussion to properly formulate plan of care or specialist referrals.
4. Participants will understand proper PT management in the acute vs. chr
onic phase of concussion symptoms.
5. Participants will identify subje
ctive information that indicate a cervical dysfunction that contribute to p
ost concussive symptoms.
6. Participants will acknowledge the benefit
of using standardized outcome measures to determine symptomolgy and clinica
l presentation.
7. Participants will verbalize the similarities and d
ifferences in presentation of whiplash vs post concussion syndrome.
8.
Participants will review the relevant anatomy of the cervical spine as it
relates to concussion.
9. Participants will observe and practice a sys
tematic top down approach to assessing the cervical spine for dysfunction c
ontributing to persistent pain in patients following concussion.
10.
Participants will observe and practice special tests that differentiate cer
vicogenic dysfunction from the other aspects of dysfunction in the concusse
d patient.
11. Participants will discuss potential treatment options
including manual therapy, therapeutic exercise prescription, and advanced p
rogressions for return to sport in the concussed athlete.
12. Particip
ants will identify subjective data that indicate a physiologic dysfunction
that contribute to post concussive symptoms.
13. Participants will obs
erve the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test assessing the physiologic system
for dysfunction contributing to persistent pain in patients following conc
ussion and will recall the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test termination cr
iteria.
14. Participants will discuss the exercise prescription follo
wing the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test.
15. Participants will be a
ble to identify common causes of dizziness after concussion.
16. Parti
cipants will be able to identify appropriate assessments for vestibulo-ocul
ar PCS.
