This is an evidence-based introductory course for physical t herapists, physical therapist assistants, and students and is appropriate f or acute care, home health, OP, and rehab settings. The course is designed to introduce the therapist to the assessments, interventions, and applicati on techniques utilized across the continuum of rehabilitation and Pilates. The neurological component of the course will review the brain as it is str uctured for motor learning, with a review of mirror neurons and the role th ey play in neuroplasticity as it applies to movement acquisition. We will s ummarize the evolution of Pilates and how it has become “mainstream” today and discuss the Principles of Pilates as the foundation for successful move ment. Participants will develop an appreciation for Pilates principles and exercises, followed by a lecture demonstration, the role they play in neuro plasticity, and applying them to movement integration. 2CCUs
At the conclusion of the course, participants w
ill be able to:
1. Apply the concept of neuroplasticity
for fostering new movement patterns;
2. Differentiate the importance o
f motor control and the role of mirror neurons for movement acquisition;
3. Interpret the evolution of Pilates and how Pilates is now utilized ac
ross the rehabilitation spectrum for different patient populations;
4.
Apply the concepts of the Pilates Principles and implement them appropriat
ely in their respective setting;
5. Experience and interpret the Pilat
es Principles in their own bodies during a lab “movement session”;

Apply movement integration and evidence-based research to their current the
rapeutic interventions.

Angela Tamborello, PTA, CLT,
NCPT graduated from the University of North Texas (Denton) with h
er Bachelor of Science in 1991, and from the Houston Community College Syst
em with an Associate in Applied Sciences in Physical Therapy in 1997. She w
orked for Memorial City Hospital in Houston, TX from March 1998-July 2002;
and joined the Baylor Scott & White Healthcare System July 2002-present
. Practicing for 22 years, Angela has experience with Neuro-Trauma, Cardiop
ulmonary, post Lung Transplant, Medical-surgical, Orthopedic, and Oncology
populations. As a Senior Physical Therapist Assistant at BSWH - Dallas Acut
e Care Division, Angela serves as a Clinical Instructor, and was recently i
nvited to serve on the PTA Advisory Board Committee for the Collin County P
TA program. In 2018, Angela completed her Comprehensive Pilates Certificati
on with Polestar Pilates International, in 2019 acquired her Pilates Method
Alliance Certification, and recently acquired her certification as a Licen
sed Buff Bones Instructor. Angela works as a Pilates Instructor at the Bayl
or Tom Landry Health and Wellness Center (May 2018-present).
