The focus of this course are the following: APTA- State of the Profession and State of the Association: A talk regarding the health of our profession and the association that helps sustain and propel healthcare towards the Mission and Vision of APTA.Health Behavior Coaching Skills: a talk regarding the importance of empowering clients to adopt a healthy lifestyle thereby making physical therapists more effective in their abilities in treatment.Posture: What Difference Does It Make?: A talk that makes posture a realm that physical therapists and physical therapy assistants needs to address in improving function and quality of life.Standard American Diet and Standard American Diseases: A talk about nutrition and the role of physical therapists accentuating treatments of chronically ill clients. 9CCUs

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

“APTA-State of the Profession and State of the Association”
1. Be apprised of the current work of the APTA;
2. Be familiar with the Vision and Mission of the APTA;
3. Be introduced to the current strategic priorities of the APTA;
4. Know how to engage with their professional organization in ways specific to their availability and preferences.

“Health Behavior Coaching Skills”
1.Recognize and be able to assess various personal and environmental factors that impact behavior change (self-efficacy, values, barriers, knowledge, etc.) in the context of a health coaching encounter;
2.Describe the principles and key constructs of motivational interviewing; 
3.Initiate and engage the patient/client in discussions about health behavior change. Practice health behavior coaching using case examples.

“Posture: What Difference Does it Make”
1. Examine the concept of age-related hyperkyphosis/forward head posture and its causative factors;
2. Discuss the multisystem health implications of hyperkyphosis;
3. Perform postural measurements including tragus to wall and block test;
4. Discuss the impact of manual therapy and exercise on multiple systems including posture, gait, functional mobility, and quality of life through case presentation.

“Standard American Diet and Standard American Diseases”
1.Discuss the relationship between the Standard American Diet and the Standard American Diseases;
2.Explain the difference between allergies and intolerances;
3.Discuss the relationship between food and inflammation;
4.Describe the relationship of a healthy diet and physical and/or mental performance;
5.Discuss the controversies involving genetically modified foods vs. non-genetically modified foods and organic vs. non organic foods;
6.Describe the components of the recommended Integrative Nutrition Food Plate;
7.Discuss the concept of bio-individuality with regard to food choices;
8.Recognize the role of physicial therapy in whole patient management;
9.Describe the difference between health coaching and health education;
10.Recognize the role of Primary food in the well-being of patients.

Speaker(s)
Sharon Dunn, OCS, ABPTS, PT, PhD graduated in 1987 with a BS in Physical Therapy, a MHS in 1996, and a PhD in Cellular Biology and Anatomy in 2006, all from LSUHSC in Shreveport. Sharon is a board certified specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, and currently serves as Associate Professor in the DPT program and Chair of the Rehabilitation Sciences Department at LSUHSC. In addition, she developed a residency program for Orthopaedic Physical Therapy in 2008, which has since produced 22 graduates. Sharon’s service to her professional organization began when she was a student, and most recently she was elected as President of the APTA. Her passions are advocacy, member engagement, and our profession’s potential to add great value to a disrupted health delivery system.
Janet Bezner, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Texas State University. Janet teaches, conducts research on physical activity and provides service to the university community, including serving as a Faculty Senator. She received her bachelor’s degree in physical therapy at the University of Texas Medical Branch, her master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University, degree PhD in health education from the University of Texas and a DPT degree from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Prior to joining Texas State in August 2014, she was Vice President of Education, Governance and Administration at the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and prior to that, senior vice president for PeakCare, Inc., a health care technology firm, where she managed the development of a wellness and prevention software and video library aimed at employers to assist in decreasing health care costs associated with illness and injury at work. Janet spent 7 years teaching physical therapy at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, Texas, and has practiced in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals, home health, long-term care and corporate wellness. Janet served on APTA’s Board of Directors prior to joining its staff, she is a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA, and a recipient of the Lucy Blair Service Award. She currently serves as the Chief Delegate of the Texas Chapter and coordinates the key contact network for the chapter. Bezner is a graduate of the 2009 Leadership Alexandria program, is a licensed Franklin Covey facilitator, and a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach. She is an experienced speaker and facilitator on topics related to leadership, personal development, strategic planning, and health promotion and wellness.
Lynne Hughes, PT, PhD, OCS, MTC is an Associate Professor. She received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from UTMB, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Texas Woman's University, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Health Promotion and Wellness from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions.Dr. Hughes has been teaching at UTMB since 2014. Prior to that time, she taught at Angelo State University and the University of the Incarnate Word. She practiced clinically for 16 years at Scott & White Hospital. Her current research is in posture and manual therapy. In addition, she is serving as a Member of TPTA Board of Directors, Member of TPTA Executive Committee and Chair, Finance Committee, TPTA.
Laurayne P. Hurst, PT, DPT, Med, CLT-LANA has a cumulative experience of 40+ years in leadership, teaching, counseling, rehabilitation and public service. She serves in various public and professional committees: Integrative Health and Nutrition Coach, Certified Lymphedema Therapist NMC, National Lymphedema Network Affiliative, Delegate to APTA House of Delegates, Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee. She got her Doctor of Physical Therapy at Rosalind Franklin School of Science and Medicine, North Chicago, Illinois; Certified Lymphedema Therapist – LANA Certification; Norton School of Lymphatic Studies – Certified Lymphedema Therapist; Master of Education with emphasis on community counseling - Stephen F. Austin State University; Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy - The University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas; Bachelor of Science in Biology and Mathematics with Teacher Certification - Stephen F. Austin State University.
