Equity, Disparity, Diversity, and Unconscious Bias in Healthcare: Beyond the Buzz Words (NTD)
Tuesday, January 19, 2021, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM CDT
Category: District Meetings

The APTA supports efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to better serve the association, profession, and society. A new standing committee and Director of Inclusion staff position at APTA have been created to advance the APTA’s strategic plan objective of improving DEI in the profession and association. At the District level, we support and value these efforts. As health providers, we must first familiarize ourselves with terms including equity, disparity, diversity, and unconscious bias, so that we can acknowledge their impact on health outcomes and their influence within our healthcare systems. Increased awareness should allow us to identify our personal roles and responsibilities in mitigating health disparities and unconscious biases and pursuing healthy equity and diversity within our workplaces and communities. 1.5CCUs

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1) Define and explore the following terms and how they relate to health and our healthcare systems: equity, disparity, diversity, unconscious bias;
2) Explore unconscious bias and how it impacts health disparities;
3) Examine diversity and disparities in physical therapy clinical and academic settings;
4) Explore roles of the PT/PTA/SPTs in mitigating current health disparities and pursuing healthy equity within our workplaces and communities.
