The focus of the course activity is identifying transitions to palliative care and hospice and the implications to the field of physical therapy. The content relates to the scope of physical therapy and its limitations. This course will provide practical, applicable strategies to utilize conversational points with families during transition from curative/ rehabilitative care to palliative care as part of continuum of care. 1CCU

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Delineate the difference between hospice and palliative care and their roles in various practice settings (Nursing, Chaplain, PT/OT, Speech Therapy, Pharmacy, Child Life Specialist, Social Work, Case Managers).
• Identify clients in appropriate transition periods from curative care to palliative care.
• Identify commonly utilized talking points with families during the transition from curative to palliative care.

Speaker(s)
MICHAEL BEETS,MD is a family medicine doctor in Tyler, Texas. He received his medical degree from University of Texas Medical Branch and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Tom is a certified American Board of Family Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine practitioner. He is the Medical Director of the Texas Palliative Care and The Hospice of East Texas. He is accounted for more than 40 publications in the realms of cardiovascular, ethical medicine, organ donation, pain assessment and management, end of life issues and palliative care and hospice. Among his Awards, Honors and Recognition are the following: He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. His Honors and recognition includes Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, War on Terrorism Service Medal and Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization Device.
