A 7 Step Evaluation & Treatment Strategy using Multi-Dimensional Treatment Interventions for MSK Dysfunction (HOTD)

Course will review evidence-based evaluation and treatment methods focused on musculoskeletal dysfunction.  This will allow attendees to create a model for standardized methods which will ultimately enhance ability to achieve accurate differential diagnosis. 1.5CCUs

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Understand precautions, contraindications for STMOB, Manipulation
• Demonstrate key concepts of the 5 components of abnormal movement patterns 
• Discuss, review and demonstrate the concept of END FEEL for all tissues  
• Define, localize and treat (using MSK treatment tools) upper quarter/lower quarter myofascial, joint, nerve, visceral restrictions, and motor control, proprioceptive dysfunctions  

Speaker(s)
Dr. James Venhuizen, PT, DPT, MHSc, FOC, CFMT, DN-C has over 34 years of clinical experience in physical therapy.  He graduated from the University of Iowa PT program, and went on to get an advanced degree in Clinical Orthopedics from the University of Indianapolis, and his transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy from Texas Tech University. 

He has received certifications in McConnell Taping, and Ergonomics/Body Mechanics, and Industrial Medicine Worksite analysis/Functional testing in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. He received a Functional Orthopedic Certification in 2003 and the Certified Functional Manual Therapy in 2013 from the Institute of Physical Art in Steamboat Springs, CO. He received his International Certification in Dry Needling from hands on Seminars in 2016.

Dr. Venhuizen is in his 4th year as Adjunct Faculty instructor at the University of St. Augustine – Austin campus where he taught Applied Medical Physiology, Gerontology in Rehab, Physical Therapy Ethics, along with many other courses as a Lab Assistant. He’s assisted 18 Research III Case studies, and currently assisting in 4 research projects on: Postural Restoration and L4-L5 Grade II Spondylolesthesis; Traumatic Acetabular ORIF – Benefits of Manual Therapy followed by Prescriptive Exercise; TOS: Effect of manual therapy, scapular, RTC strengthening, neural flossing in a 20 yo softball player; Functional Training combined with Cervical Core Stability/Strengthening for Cervical Myelopathy.
He also was involved as Adjunct Faculty for two years at University of Mary Hardin Baylor DPT program, Lab Assisting in Gross Anatomy and Neuro-Anatomy, MSK Evaluation, and MSK Special Testing.

Schedule

6:00-6:30 Snacks/Business Meeting
6:30-8:00 CCU Presentation
Intro: Question, Discussion format (5 minutes). 
Presentation Review (10 minutes)
Soft Tissue Mobilization Techniques (10 minutes)
Review, demonstrate key concepts of the 5 components of abnormal movement patterns (10 minutes)
Discuss, review and demonstrate the concept of END FEEL for all tissues (5 minutes).
Discuss, review and demonstrate P.I.P (Pre-test/Intervention/Post-test) and Clustering of 3-5 tests/screens (15 minutes)
Define/localize/treat (using MSK treatment tools) upper quarter/lower quarter myofascial, joint, nerve, visceral restrictions, and motor control, proprioceptive dysfunctions (10 minutes).
Review and demonstration: the concept of treating with the Functional Load Progression for the Upper/Lower Quarter; NWB to PWB to FWB to end range. (20 minutes)
Closing summary/review of the current research/questions/discussion (5 minutes)
