Harris Health Residency Capstones (SED)

The first capstone presentation will provide information for physical therapy students, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants regarding residency and specialty training. The second capstone presentation will provide information for physical therapy students, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants regarding factors influencing length of stay in acute care, particularly with stroke patients, and the impact of these factors on clinical decision making1CCU 

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
*Student Perceptions of Residency Training:
1) Increase awareness of important factors affecting PT students’ interest in residency training;
2) Understand the perceptions of PT students’ in regards to residency training.

*Primary Factors Regarding Length of Stay for Patients with Stroke at Ben Taub:
1. Discuss the possible impact of Harris Health System’s inpatient rehabilitation facility closure on Harris Health System’s patient population post-stroke;
2. Discuss the importance of The Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Registry Tool in collecting data on patient characteristics and adherence to stroke treatment guidelines to move forward with the methodology of our capstone project;
3. Discuss areas of future research pertaining to clinical decision making and interdisciplinary care for patients post-stroke in the acute care setting in our healthcare system

Speaker(s)
Jackson Hitchner, PT, DPT recently completed the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency with Harris Health System and has remained on staff with Harris Health. He received his BA in Exercise and Sports Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before obtaining his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the Medical University of South Carolina. He has provided lectures at Texas Woman's University and UTMB for their physical therapy students in Therapeutic Exercise as well as Surgical Interventions and Postoperative Management for both upper extremities and lower extremities. He is eager to share his recent capstone presentation on his research regarding residency training.

Jose Trujillo, PT, DPT recently completed the Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency with Harris Health System and has remained on staff with Harris Health. He previously received a Bachelor's in Kinesiology from the University of North Texas prior to obtaining his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Texas Woman's University in Houston. He has assisted in neurologic labs for TWU physical therapy students and has also provided lectures on Neurolgic Conditions and Clinical Syndromes of the Brainstem for TWU Houston DPT program as well as a lecture for UTMB DPT program on Cranium, Meninges, and Ventricles. Additionally he has provided case studies within the Harris Health System including Ben Taub Hospital.

Sophie Rhines, PT, DPT also recently completed the Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency with Harris Health System and has remained on staff with Harris Health. She received her Bachelor of Science from Tulane University in Neuroscience and was double major in Dance as well. She then obtained her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from LSU Health Science Center. She has presented within the Harris Health System on Dizziness in Acute Care as well as a case study on bracing/orthotics. She has lectured for TWU DPT program on SCI and for UTMB DPT program on Cranium, Meninges, and Ventricles.

You must register for the meeting. Registration is used in the attendance verification process. Registration closes at noon on 11/15/2022.

This course has been approved by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners as meeting continuing competence requirements for PTs and PTAs. In order to receive credit, you must be present for the full course and complete the course evaluation by 11/30. Credits will be issued no later than December 1, 2022. Please allow until then for processing. You will log in to the same account used for registering to retrieve your transcript.
