Rethinking Human Rehabilitation: An Introduction to a Process Based Approach for Pain and Movement Problems (NTD)
Tuesday, August 01, 2023, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM CDT
Category: District Meetings

The United States of America has the highest rate of reported pain in the world with more than 1 in 4(34.1%) Americans reporting day-to-day or frequent pain in their daily lives. 1 Despite advances in diagnostics, surgery, regenerative medicine, pharmacology, and rehabilitative interventions, chronic pain continues to grow in prevalence exceeding heart disease, diabetes and cancer combined. 2Emphasis on the use of opioids for pain management from 1996 to 2001 has led to the opioid epidemic that is ravaging the American landscape resulting in an average of 142 deaths per day which now exceeds automobile accidents and gun deaths combined. 3 We are further challenged by our traditional medical education models, across multiple disciplines, including those provided in athletic training, failing to provide adequate foundations in current pain science and treatment of persistent pain. 4Physical therapists as highly qualified, multi-skilled health care have a need for an improved understanding of pain and current evidence for the treatment of pain. This need has been recognized with states like Michigan increasing their required hours in pain and symptom management. 1 CCU

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. To introduce the Human Rehabilitation Framework (HRF) as a biopsychosocial process-based treatment approach for rehabilitation;
2. To provide an overview of current science-based knowledge related to pain science, movement, and manual therapy;
3. To discuss the current limitations surrounding different classification systems and introduce a new form of evidence-based practice;
4. Discuss the importance of viewing movement and pain within a functional contextualism perspective;
5. Summarize the three categories of HRF biopsychosocial processes you can immediately implement in your clinical practice.

Speaker(s)
Cameron Faller is a physical therapist, educator, and strength and conditioning specialist who has been involved in the movement industry for over 10 years. Having experience throughout several healthcare organizations in his career, Cameron has recognized the many flaws impacting adequate care for individuals struggling with pain or movement problems. This ultimately fueled his passion to help those that the rest of the healthcare world has given up on. He is able to inspire hope and promote growth for this population at his clinical facility he co-owns called Dynamic Movement and Recovery (DMR)in Grand Rapids, MI. He also is heavily involved with being an advocate for the physical therapy profession serving multiple roles within the APTA Michigan Chapter as well as the Michigan Pain SIG.
