Treating the Whole Person: Incorporating Trauma-Informed Care into Practice

Trauma-informed physical therapy begins with understanding the profound impact of violence, victimization, and other traumatic experiences on the life and health of a person. Designing systems, services, and community connections to accommodate trauma survivors’ needs can improve healthcare outcomes for these patients, whether trauma is disclosed or not. 1CCU
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to: 1. Identify the potential impacts of trauma; 2. Discuss what it means to be trauma-informed; 3. Describe clear action steps for providing trauma-informed care in their practice setting.
Speaker(s) Dr. Elise Bjork received her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from The University of Texas at Austin in 2011, her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Texas Woman’s University in 2015 and is on track to complete a PhD in Physical Therapy at TWU in 2025. She is an ABPTS Board-Certified Sports Clinical Specialist and worked in outpatient sports and orthopedics settings with adults and children. Currently, Dr. Bjork is an Assistant Professor in the DPT program at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in Austin, Texas. Her research interests include trauma-informed physical therapy practice, culturally responsive teaching, and sports physical therapy with current projects on the psychosocial aspects of blood flow restriction training and pedagogical strategies for teaching social determinants of health.
