Overcoming Patient Access Barriers by using a Social Worker’s Lense (NTD)
Wednesday, January 24, 2024, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM CDT
Category: District Meetings

Physical Therapy is about helping an individual achieve results, so they can live at their own personal level of optimal performance. Social Work as a profession, really has a similar goal, in that the client is trying to achieve optimal life performance, however, social work is unique from other professions in that social workers are used to working with the barriers that clients present with. By taking a closer look at the social determinants of health, otherwise known as barriers to achieving health goals, PT professionals can not only understand the reasons why clients may not engage in treatment, but tweak their practices to include ways to engage with patients in a way that meets them where they are at, thus increasing likelihood of engagement in services. 1CCU

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss Social Determinants of Health (what are they and why do they matter);
2. Discuss reasons for non-engagement in services;
3. Discuss possible ways to overcome non-engagement in services, and how to reach a population that is difficult to engage.

Speaker(s)
Jamie Noble, MSW is a social worker located in St. Joseph, Missouri, where she lives with her husband and three children. Jamie received her master’s in social work from the University of Kansas in 2016. Jamie has worked in the field for over a decade now, and while her primary area of interest is macro level work, she has held many micro level positions that have given her firsthand experience learning and navigating challenging systems with clients that always bring a unique set of barriers. Jamie currently works as a school social worker, but always finds herself asking the big picture questions as to how we as providers and practitioners can help meet our goals, as well as meet the needs of patients. In her spare time, Jamie enjoys reading and working out.
