There are hundreds of millions of kicking athletes in the world, yet the phases and musculoskeletal requirements of kicking are not well known. During this complex movement, the athlete must coordinate multiple regions of the body to perform an explosive action. After injury, the musculoskeletal system works in conjunction with neurophysiological, somatovisceral, and biopsychosocial responses to promote recovery. By considering the regional interdependence model, physical therapists can improve outcomes in these athletes. This session will combine the biomechanics of kicking and the regional interdependence model through an interactive lecture and discussion, with opportunity for question and answer. 1CCU

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Identify influences of the kicking leg, support leg, type of kick, and gender on kicking action.
2. Explain how specific injuries may impact phases of the kick.
3. Analyze regional interdependence and its role in manual therapy selection for pain modulation.

Speaker(s)
Lauren Hendrix, PT, DPT, SCS, FAAOMPT, CSCS is currently a faculty mentor for the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program and coordinates the lower extremity module. She is fellowship-trained in orthopedic manual therapy through Institute for Athlete Regeneration and is a board certified Sports Clinical Specialist. Lauren completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Texas Woman’s University in Houston, TX in 2015. She has been published in the Sports Medicine of International Open Journal with research surrounding lower extremity injury risk. Nichole received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Miami and completed her Orthopedic Residency from Houston Methodist Sugar Land. She now serves as an adjunct faculty member and mentor for the residency program.

Nichole Volstad, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT is also a former NCAA Division 1 soccer player and completed a sport focused manual fellowship with the Institute of Athlete Regeneration.
