Managing Social Determinants of Health in a Community Hospital Setting (SED)
Tuesday, November 17, 2020, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM CDT
Category: District Meetings

Barriers to Physical Therapy in a Public Health System:Physical therapists are uniquely equipped to observe and address barriers to health care access, given the frequency with which we see and the amount of time that we spend face-to-face with our patients. However, physical therapists must first be aware of how social determinants of health can play a role in our patients outcomes before we are able to manage and eliminate them. It is critical that we are able to look beyond the medical chart in order to treat the whole patient. -Health Literacy and Portion Sizes in Overweight and Obese Adults: Often physical therapists treat patients who have musculoskeletal injury/pain which are made worse or limited in healing capacity due to being overweight or obese. During their journey to reduce this musculoskeletal pain, patients are advised to control their weight and comorbidities that may affect healing and safety with exercises. This can be difficult for many due to limited knowledge and low health literacy levels. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether change can be made to improve health literacy and ability to pick portion sizes after an educational intervention. 1CCU

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Understand financial and non-financial barriers to physical therapy access;
2. Discuss social determinants of health and how they affect physical therapy attendance and outcomes;
3. Understand the role that physical therapists can play in addressing social determinants of health in order to optimize outcomes;
4. Understanding the obesity prevalence rate in the United States and Harris County and how the Fit and Strong Together program assists with weight loss;
5. Identify how outcome measures such as the Newest Vital Sign and Portion Picking help assess health literacy in patients that are overweight or obese;
6. Discuss the correlation between health literacy and a person’s ability to identify appropriate serving size.
